Statement From the CEO: Racial Inequality

Over the past weeks, our leadership team has been holding discussions with employees across our family of companies about the heartbreak and disruption unfolding across the United States. I’m deeply saddened. We are all impacted by the evidence of injustice as well as the incidents of violence that have drawn attention from peaceful demonstrations.

I want you to know that Sempra’s entire leadership team is steadfast in its belief that there is no place in our communities – or inside our company – for discrimination or intolerance of any kind. An indignity suffered by anyone reflects on all of us.

What we need to fall back on in times of great challenge are our personal and company values. At Sempra:

  • We do the right thing.
  • We champion people.
  • We shape the future.

At our company, these core principles underpin all we do. I firmly believe that by living these values every day, we are more resilient during times of crisis — and can increasingly be a force of positive change in our communities.

This latest tragedy is an important reminder that our continued work in the areas of diversity, tolerance and inclusion are central to a safe and welcoming work environment. Moreover, it is imperative that we treat one another with dignity and model being the leaders of character that our communities so need today.

Remember too that the ideal of service to others is ingrained in all of us and deeply rooted in the essential work we do every day to serve the basic energy needs of tens of millions of Americans. We all know someone who may be suffering or downtrodden. If it is a Sempra colleague, please let them know they are not alone and that we have professional and confidential counseling services available through our Employee Assistance Programs. It is up to each of us to do our part to support them and help make our company and communities better.

Finally, I truly believe we are at our best when we are united by our values. At this moment in history, each of us are being called upon to live these values inside and outside the company. Now is the time to tap into our collective compassion for the hardship and injustice being borne by others, while living our values every day.
